Top UN official on HIV/AIDS to address over 1,000 political leaders in India

The top United Nations official on HIV/AIDS will address tomorrow over 1,000 political leaders from every part of India, expected to convene for the first time ever in New Delhi for a national convention where they will sign a declaration underlining their personal commitment to fight the pandemic.

Turning the tide on AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria is a priority second to none, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan said today in a message to government ministers gathered in Paris for an international meeting in support of a global fund to fight the devastating illnesses.

Top UN official urges African leaders to invest in a full-scale response to AIDS

With up to 1,000 people dying of AIDS each day in the worst-affected countries in Africa and 60 million across the continent impacted by the epidemic, a top United Nations official today urged leaders at the African Union Summit in Mozambique to invest in prevention, care and treatment of the epidemic.

In a message to Caribbean Heads of State gathered in Jamaica to discuss crucial issues affecting the region, Secretary-General Kofi Annan today said the United Nations would continue to work in partnership with them on a range of challenges including international trade and HIV/AIDS.
