Hundreds of people have been killed and thousands of homes in Afghanistan and Pakistan were destroyed by the massive 7.5 magnitude earthquake that struck the Badakshan Province in Afghanistan yesterday, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

UN condemns attack on human rights workers in Afghanistan that killed two, injured six

The top UN official in Afghanistan has condemned the killing of two human rights workers today by a remote-controlled explosive device in the eastern city of Jalalabad, saying “the climate of fear created by such attacks, threatens vital human rights work” being carried out throughout the country.

Opium poppy cultivation in Afghanistan decreased 19 per cent in 2015, compared to the previous year, according to the latest Afghanistan Opium Survey figures released today by the Afghan Ministry of Counter Narcotics and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

The humanitarian situation in Pakistan has a “positive trajectory” despite an ongoing crisis, according to a senior UN official who has just visited the country.

Five million Pakistanis have been displaced by conflict in recent years, but many are now returning home.

Senior UN relief official urges action to address urgent humanitarian needs in Afghanistan and Pakistan

The head of Operations at the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), John Ging, called today for renewed international commitment to address urgent humanitarian needs, and to shore up regional peace and stability in Afghanistan and Pakistan, noting that the two countries were on differing humanitarian trajectories.

No humanitarian agencies left in besieged Afghan city of Kunduz after hospital bombing – UN

There are currently no humanitarian agencies left in Kunduz, the north-eastern Afghan city where an air strike hit the Médecins sans Frontières (MSF) hospital, causing the deaths and injuries of medical personnel, patients and other civilians, the United Nations said today.
