The United Nations Security Council has condemned in the strongest terms the attack yesterday on a United Kingdom embassy vehicle in Kabul, Afghanistan, reiterating serious concern at the threats posed by the Taliban, Al-Qaida and other terrorist and extremist groups.

Afghanistan: UN strongly condemns suicide bombing at volleyball match

A brutal terrorist attack which killed at least 50 civilians in Afghanistan over the weekend is an “atrocity” and may amount to a war crime, the top United Nations envoy to the country declared today as he condemned the indiscriminate suicide bombing in “the strongest terms.”

Afghanistan: UN expert calls for sustainable measures to address violence against women

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on violence against women, Rashida Manjoo, has called on the Government of Afghanistan and the international community to adopt sustainable measures to address the causes and consequences of gender-based violence in the country.

Opium harvest in Afghanistan hits new high in 2014 – UN

Opium cultivation and production in Afghanistan reached record levels this year, with the former increasing seven per cent to 224,000 hectares in 2014, and production levels potentially climbing as much as 17 per cent, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

In Afghanistan, UN crime chief pledges support to combat ‘disastrous’ drug trade, corruption

Visiting Kabul over the weekend, the head of the United Nations agency combating all forms of criminal activity, met with newly-elected President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah and pledged support to counter the harmful effects of illicit drugs, organized crime and corruption on Afghanistan and its people.
