UN agency welcomes new Afghan policy protecting rights of internally displaced

Afghanistan’s new national policy to protect the rights of some 630,000 internally displaced people recognizes that all Afghans have the right to freedom of movement and residence, the United Nations refugee agency today detailed.

Civilian casualties in Afghanistan up 14 per cent last year, says new UN report

Civilian casualties in Afghanistan rose by 14 per cent last year, according to a new report released on Saturday by the United Nations, which also found that it was the worst year since 2009 in terms of the number of women and children killed or injured as a result of conflict-related violence.

Afghanistan: UN official says women’s participation ‘key measure’ of election’s success

Calling the role of women in decision-making vital for Afghanistan’s future, the top United Nations official there said today the level of their participation in Presidential and Provincial Council elections on 5 April will be “a key measure of success” of the polls.
