Afghanistan: Security Council extends mission amid calls for continued UN support

The Security Council today extended the mandate of the United Nations mission in Afghanistan for another year, after Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and other speakers urged continued UN support to the Government as it assumes full responsibility in most areas by 2014.

Deploring recent suicide bombings, UN calls for end to attacks harming Afghan civilians

The United Nations political mission in Afghanistan today condemned two recent suicide attacks carried out by anti-government forces which resulted in the deaths of at least 19 civilians, including nine children, and the wounding of at least another 31 civilians.
