Yemen faces a number of challenges in its ongoing democratic transition, including the restructuring of the military and an acute humanitarian crisis, a senior United Nations official told the Security Council today, while adding that the country can have a successful outcome.

The United Nations envoy for Yemen said today that an agreement has been reached to resolve the last contentious issue of the allocation of seats for the all-inclusive national dialogue conference that is a key element of the country’s democratic transition.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today urged Yemen to build on progress made over the last twelve months since the signing of a historic transition agreement which helped end violence in the country and set it on a path of democratic transition.

Commending the progress made by Yemen in its democratic transition, the Security Council today called on all parties to continue to honour the timetable for achieving key milestones along that path, including the upcoming national dialogue.
