Stigmatized, shunned and shamed, International Widows’ Day draws attention to their unique needs

The loss of a spouse or partner is often devastating, but for many women it is magnified by a “long-term struggle” for basic needs, human rights and dignity, according to UN Women, in a message to mark International Widows’ Day.

The international community must take stronger action to end widespread discrimination against widows, the acting head of the United Nations entity mandated to promote gender equality today said reiterating that an estimated 115 million widows around the live below the poverty line and 81 million are subject to physical abuse.
