UN refugee agency backs new steps to rescue migrants in peril at sea

With thousands of men, women and children crammed on rusty unseaworthy boats braving the waves, and often facing death, each year in search of work, better living conditions or protection against persecution, the United Nations refugee agency today pledged support for new regulations to reinforce rescue mechanisms.

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) António Guterres left today on an eight-day mission to four African nations that will culminate in Liberia next week when he marks World Refugee Day on June 20 with some of the hundreds of thousands of returning refugees and displaced now struggling to rebuild their country.
