UN expert calls on Ukraine to step up its efforts to protect the rights of the internally displaced

At the conclusion of an official visit to Ukraine, a United Nations human rights expert has called on the Government to step up its response to prevent and address internal displacement and to provide durable solutions to the persons already displaced.

UN convoys reach thousands affected by conflict in eastern Ukraine

For the first time in five months, convoys from the United Nations refugee agency have reached non-Government controlled areas in Luhansk, in the easternmost part of Ukraine, carrying much- needed construction materials, kitchen sets and items for use in winter for thousands of people affected by the conflict.

Unless urgent action is taken in Ukraine to separate sides and remove heavy weaponry, wide spread hostilities in the country could re-escalate, a senior United Nations human rights official today warned.
Ivan Simonovic, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights, said that half of all civilian casualties since the middle of last month were caused by shelling.
