Noting that recent crises in Europe show that the continent remains at risk from new outbreaks of conflict, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called for reinforcing mutual trust and respect to strengthen stability and cooperation both within Europe and beyond.

As the volatile conflict in eastern Ukraine enters its fourth year, one million children are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance – nearly double the number this time last year, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) reported today.

Intensified fighting between Government and non-Government forces near densely populated areas in eastern Ukraine is endangering civilians, the senior United Nations humanitarian representative in the country told reporters in Geneva today.
On 1 February 2017, sisters Vika and Yulia are waiting in a bus to be evacuated from the town of Avdiivka, Donetsk region of Ukraine. Following intense fighting at the end of January 2017, more than 17,000 people are facing freezing weather without any heating, electricity or water.
