UN moves ahead with interim tsunami early-warning system for Indian Ocean

In a bid to set up an immediate interim tsunami early-warning system for the Indian Ocean, which experts believe could have saved scores of thousands of lives in last December’s disaster, a United Nations-sponsored meeting of experts has called on all affected countries to establish emergency contact centres by the end of the month.

With tsunami-hit countries in Asia moving into the rebuilding phase, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is launching a series of humanitarian activities, ranging from water pond construction to food-for-work projects, to help hundreds of thousands of survivors return to a productive and independent way of life.

Seeking to avoid a new “infodemic,” a repeat of the slump in Asian tourism from the SARS health crisis two years ago, the United Nations tourism agency has called on the world’s media to take care in its coverage of destinations hit by the Indian Ocean tsunami so as not to slow the recovery of an important economic sector.
