UN General Assembly adopts new legal protections for humanitarian workers

With over 200 United Nations civilian staff killed by hostile acts, and many others kidnapped, hurt or abused in the line of duty since 1992, the General Assembly today expanded legal protection for post-conflict humanitarian workers, to the acclaim of Secretary-General Kofi Annan and Assembly President Jan Eliasson.

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today announced the appointment of Alicia Bárcena Ibarra of Mexico as his Deputy Chef de Cabinet, replacing Elizabeth Lindenmeyer, who resigned earlier this year.

Annan and other officials pay tribute to UN staff after a 'rollercoaster year'

Among a parade of ethnic costumes and other celebratory events marking Staff Day at United Nations Headquarters today, Secretary-General Kofi Annan praised the performance of personnel during "this rollercoaster year" at a staff assembly and, with other officials, paid tribute to all staff members at a wreath-laying for those 177 who died in service in the last 17 months.
