As the United Nations International Year of Sport and Physical Education 2005 draws to a close, more than 400 sports and development figures have come together in Switzerland to plan the next stage of maximizing the potential of sport for development and peace.

Athletes worldwide will be subjected to the same anti-doping rules and regularly tested, sanctions will be uniform, and fresh emphasis will be given to raise public awareness of doping’s adverse effects under a new United Nations-backed treaty that is the first binding and universal legal instrument seeking to eliminate the scourge.

The spokesman for the United Nations International Year of Sport and Physical Education, tennis star Roger Federer, said today he is thinking about establishing a tennis tournament in Africa – maybe in the south – as part of his spokesman’s role.

Swiss tennis champion Roger Federer has been named the first United Nations spokesperson for the International Year of Sport and Physical Education, in recognition of the outstanding example he sets as a role model in sport and his foundation's work in South Africa.
