In Spain today, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan accepted the first Seville Node between Cultures Award, and immediately pledged to donate the accompanying monetary prize to a project helping Congolese women traumatized by sexual violence.

Annan welcomes Spanish police contribution for Haiti, assistance in DR Congo

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who is on an official visit to Spain, welcomed a decision by Madrid today to commit Spanish police officers to the UN operation in Haiti as well as its support for a Rapid Reaction Force that will back up the UN’s mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as the impoverished African country heads toward expected elections in June.

UN Secretary-General calls on Basque group to honour permanent ceasefire in Spain

Welcoming a decision by the Basque organization ETA to declare a permanent ceasefire, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan called on Thursday for the honouring of this commitment so as to put an end to years of bloody violence in Spain.
