Although developing countries often look to do deals with wealthy nations in order to help boost their economies, working closely with States facing similar challenges – so-called “South-South cooperation” – may be the key to sustainable growth and paving the way for the transformational change required to achieve global development goals.  

A delegation of Indian parliamentarians visited the UN Headquarters in New York last week to mark the release of the India-UN Development Partnership Fund’s annual report, showcasing the growing momentum behind South-South cooperation. 

Collaboration between developing countries, often known as South-South cooperation, can help to solve what a senior UN official has described as the world’s “complex development context”.

Joint efforts by China and Africa can spark new momentum for development on the continent, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said on Thursday, at a high-level meeting in Beijing. 

Developing countries must lead efforts to reform outdated multilateral institutions and frameworks, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in remarks to the third summit of the Group of 77 (G-77) and China, which opened in Kampala, Uganda, on Sunday.

From climate change to worsening inequalities and COVID-19 fallouts, top UN officials told a major forum in Bangkok, Thailand, on Monday that greater cooperation among developing countries, known as the global South, was needed to overcome a multitude of challenges.

In this era of unprecedented challenge and upheaval, “solutions lie in solidarity,” the UN chief said in his message commemorating United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation, on Monday. 

The UN Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) held a high-level virtual panel discussion on Friday focused on boosting solidarity “in support of a more inclusive, resilient and sustainable future”. 

“The spirit of South-South cooperation and global solidarity”, is alive and well across the hemisphere as the word grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic, said the UN chief in a message relayed to countries of the Global South on Thursday.
