The introduction of “green” or sustainable practices supported by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) is helping the “blue economy” of an Indian Ocean archipelago to thrive.

Protecting marine areas from over-exploitation and providing the people who have traditionally lived off the sea with a sustainable alternative livelihood does not come cheap, but in the Seychelles, a focus on financial instruments is making that task easier. 

Noting Seychelles’ efforts to develop a marine-based economy while reducing ocean degradation and alleviating poverty, an independent United Nations human rights expert today urged greater attention to teaching skills in the ‘blue economy.’
