The United Nations recorded a total of 259 allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA) during 2018, according to the latest report by Secretary-General António Guterres presented to the General Assembly. Although the figures rose compared with the previous two years, the report shows increased awareness among UN and UN-related staff, and improved and harmonized reporting tools across the Organization.

UN recorded 64 new allegations of sexual exploitation or abuse in the past three months

Across its various offices, agencies, and partner organisations implementing its programmes, the United Nations received 64 new allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA), involving 77 victims, between July and September, UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said on Monday.

Sexual exploitation is an “almost existential issue” for the UN refugee agency (UNHCR), Deputy High Commissioner Kelly T. Clements said on Tuesday. Announcing measures designed to encourage victims to come forward, she told UN News the number of reported cases of abuse has doubled among its more than 1,000 international partners in the last year, now that people “know where to go” to raise the alarm.

UN receives 40 allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse in last quarter of 2017
