Older people need “greater say” in disaster planning

Older people need to be consulted more consistently when it comes to planning for the eventuality of disasters; that’s according to an expert working for the non-profit organization, HelpAge International in Colombia.

Joost Van de Lest recently attended a UN conference in Paraguay focusing on how best to reduce the risk of natural and man-made catastrophes through what is known as the Sendai Framework.

Daniel Dickinson asked Mr Van de Lest how older people are affected in disasters.

Sendai: World leaders gather for UN conference on managing disaster risk

World leaders are gathering for a United Nations conference in Sendai, Japan, to agree on a new framework for managing disaster risk which will reduce mortality and economic losses.

Sendai: UN disaster risk reduction conference key to future sustainable development agenda

Government and civil society leaders from around the world are gathering in the Japanese city of Sendai for a United Nations conference that will take stock of ten years of global work to better prepare for and curb the impact of disasters, and to agree on an updated global response framework.
