Noting that conflict prevention is a “moral imperative” and a “political necessity for the credibility of international cooperation, in particular the United Nations,” the president of the UN General Assembly today opened debate on Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s recent report on preventing armed conflict around the world.

Responding to Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s call for input from the world at large on ways to build world peace, some 600 international civil society leaders will gather at United Nations Headquarters in New York tomorrow for a conference aimed at implementing a global agenda to prevent conflict, the first such meeting of its kind.

With nearly 1 million people dying from suicide every year, more than from all homicides and wars combined, the United Nations health agency today called for concerted global action to curb what it termed “a huge but largely preventable public health problem.”

The Security Council today expressed its commitment to take "early and effective action" to prevent armed conflict by employing all appropriate means at its disposal, including - with the consent of the receiving States - its missions to areas of potential conflict.
