The war in Ukraine is a “relentless humanitarian nightmare” said the UN chief on Tuesday, warning that the death and destruction afflicting civilians there will take years to overcome, and rebuild.

As Syria begins 12 years of conflict amidst soaring humanitarian needs, UN agency heads launched during a European Union conference on Tuesday, a joint appeal for $10.5 billion.
The UN chief called on the world to step up “financial, humanitarian and political commitments”, to help end nearly a decade of brutal conflict and suffering across Syria, in a video message delivered to the fourth Brussels Donor Conference on Tuesday.
A High-Level Sudan Partnership Conference took place on Thursday gathering some 50 countries and international organizations together in Berlin, generating pledges to bolster the African nation’s economic and political transformation to the tune of $1.8 billion, and discuss the challenges that lie ahead.
The donor conference on Tuesday which raised US$1.1 billion to bring Yemen back from the brink of famine was about “hard cash and resources” not “pledges and promises”.
That’s according to the UN Resident Coordinator for the war-torn country, Jamie McGoldrick, who said humanitarians needed the money “to start flowing” as soon as possible to meet the “gargantuan” needs of Yemen’s people.
