United Nations agencies are working closely with the Government of the Philippines to reach those affected by the super typhoon Haiyan, as the number of reported casualties continues to rise and access remains a challenge in many areas.

An average of 20 typhoons a year strike the Philippines.

The United Nations is ramping up its relief efforts to respond to the devastation caused by the super typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, following Government reports of some 1,200 casualties and an estimated 4.6 million people affected.

The United Nations and its partners in the Philippines are supporting the Government in assessing the damage that is being caused by what has been described as a monster typhoon.

Typhoon Haiyan known locally by a harmless sounding name, Yolanda, made landfall in Guiuan on Samar Island at 4:30 a.m. and is reported to be making its way across the country.

The Philippines Government has taken preventive measures to save lives by moving people from coastal and low-lying areas prone to flash flooding and landslides.

Philippines: UN agencies arriving to assist with post-quake relief effort

United Nations humanitarian agencies are arriving in the central Philippine island of Bohol to assist the Government with the response to a 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck yesterday and which has so far affected more than 3 million people.

Overcrowding at the main evacuation centre in the coastal province of Zamboanga, Philippines, is causing increasing health risks and vulnerability for at least 70, 000 people.
