Philippines: UN rights office appalled over simultaneous killings of ‘red-tagged’ activists

The UN human rights office (OHCHR) said on Tuesday that it was “appalled” by what appears to be the simultaneous arbitrary killings of nine activists in the Philippines during police-military operations in provinces surrounding the metropolitan area of the capital, Manila.

‘Super typhoon’ Goni: UN, partners seek $45 million in immediate relief

The United Nations and humanitarian partners in the Philippines launched, on Monday, a response plan for $45.5 million to bring life-saving assistance and protection to hundreds of thousands of people affected by Typhoon Goni. 

IOM teams are on ground conducting a rapid assessment of the most urgent needs of displaced individuals in the areas affected areas by Super Typhoon Goni (locally known as Rolly).

The trail of devastation left by Typhoon Goni in the Philippines, runs straight through some heavily populated areas – including places where COVID-19 cases are high, and where returning migrants are concentrated - UN agencies reported on Friday.  

Many areas in Batangas, southern Luzon are still covered in fallen debris and floodwater due to Super Typhoon Goni (locally known as Rolly).

“Super storm” Typhoon Goni has left several towns inaccessible and destroyed thousands of homes in the Philippines, the UN humanitarian wing has said, adding that relief efforts have been complicated by the coronavirus pandemic.

Philippines drug campaign directive seen as ‘permission to kill’: UN rights office

A campaign to eradicate illegal drugs in the Philippines that began in 2016 has led to the killing of at least 8,600 people but the real figure could be three times that number, the UN human rights office, OHCHR, said on Thursday. In a report citing “near-impunity” for the killings, which have continued along with other alleged abuses during the COVID-19 pandemic, the UN office noted that the High Commissioner for Human Rights stood ready to assist “credible efforts towards accountability”, both nationally and internationally.
