Secretary-General launches Peacebuilding Fund to ‘kick-start’ efforts to rebuild after conflict

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today launched a multi-million dollar Peacebuilding Fund to help war-ravaged countries rebuild state institutions after conflict, and act as a “kick-start” for longer term donor investment in recovery efforts.

In what United Nations officials hailed as an historic milestone in global efforts to help countries avert a relapse into bloodshed after emerging from conflict, the first meeting of the newly created Peacebuilding Commission was held today at UN Headquarters in New York.

7 countries elected to UN Peacebuilding Commission’s organizational body

In a step forward for the nascent United Nations Peacebuilding Commission – a body created in response to a call by the 2005 World Summit – seven countries were today elected by the Economic and Social Council to serve on its organizational committee.
