As Olympic torch passes through UN, Annan urges observance of truce during games

Accepting the Olympic torch in New York today as part of its relay around the world, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan urged all warring factions to lay down their arms during the upcoming Games in Athens.

As the Olympic torch winds its way through New York this weekend it will make a stop at United Nations Headquarters for a special ceremony in honour of the Olympic Truce, which calls on warring parties to lay down their weapons on behalf of the athletes participating in this year’s competition in Athens.
