Deaths soar on perilous maritime migration routes to Europe

Deaths of migrants travelling by dangerous sea routes to Europe have soared in the first six months of the year. At least 1,146 people died attempting to reach Europe by boat from January to June, the UN migration agency, IOM said on Wednesday.

There were just 47 survivors when a boat carrying over 120 people, capsized off the Libyan coast on Thursday.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) on Thursday reported yet another devastating shipwreck in the Central Mediterranean, which has claimed the lives of at least 74 migrants off the coast of Khums, Libya. It is the eighth such incident since the beginning of October.

More than 90 per cent of Africa migrants would make perilous Europe journey again, despite the risks

A landmark UN migration study published on Monday shows that 93 per cent of Africans making the journey to European countries along irregular routes, would do it again, despite facing often life-threatening danger. 

Records show that nearly 1,600 children have died around the world in search of a better future since 2014.
