Representatives of Greece and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia have agreed to a fresh round of United Nations-mediated talks to resolve their long-running dispute over the official name of the latter country.

Describing his country’s ongoing name dispute with neighbouring Greece as “utterly incomprehensible,” the President of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia told the United Nations today that a solution must be found that recognizes “our commitment, desire and determination for coexistence, community, individuality and identity.”

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon held talks today with the Foreign Minister of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, discussing the country’s long-running dispute with neighbouring Greece over its official name.

Talks between Greece and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia on the official name of the latter country will restart once the Greek elections are over and a new government is in place, the United Nations envoy dealing with the issue said today.
