International Widow’s Day

Widows must not be left out of efforts to build back better after COVID-19

When countries begin building back from the COVID-19 pandemic they must also work towards dismantling laws that discriminate against women, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in his message for International Widow’s Day on Tuesday.

On International Widow’s Day, marked on Sunday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres is asking everyone to reflect on the “economic hardship and increased vulnerability” of these bereaved women and ensure “they are not left out or left behind”.

Stigmatized, shunned and shamed, International Widows’ Day draws attention to their unique needs
