UN rights chief urges South Sudan authorities to address inter-communal violence

Authorities in South Sudan must address intercommunal violence if the nation is to achieve lasting peace, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said on Friday, in response to a recent escalation in fighting in the east and central parts of the country.  

The World Food Programme (WFP) held massive food distributions in the Ituri provice, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where thousands of persons had fled from their villages due to ethnic clashes. 21 March 2018.

Food aid is being tripled for troubled Ituri province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), to respond to what the World Food Programme (WFP) has described as the world’s second largest hunger crisis in the world, after Yemen.

Mali’s ‘self-defence’ groups must face justice, after deadly intercommunal attacks

Mali’s authorities have been urged by the UN to provide justice for the victims and survivors of attacks by so-called self-defence groups, responsible for horrific intercommunal violence in central Mali, after a weekend assault that claimed the lives of more than 150 people, including some 50 children.

Yumbi ‘a ghost city’ following DR Congo inter-communal violence

Yumbi in the western Democratic Republic of the Congo resembles a “ghost city” in the aftermath of a days-long massacre last month which left at least 535 victims. That’s according to Florence Marchal, spokesperson for the UN Mission in the country, MONUSCO.  Ms. Marchal spoke with  UN News's Pascal Sim regarding the brutal inter-ethnic killings  carried out between Banunu and Batende community members.
