A new United Nations-mandated report has found it “appears plausible” that an external attack or threat may have led to the fatal plane crash that killed former UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today urged United Nations Member States to make available all information they may have in their possession related to the circumstances and conditions of the crash that killed Dag Hammarskjöld while he was serving as UN chief more than 50 years ago, saying previous requests “have not been conclusively answered” and that unreleased material “may still be available” that could shed new light into his death.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has been handed the report of experts he appointed a few months ago to examine and assess new information relating to the tragic death of Dag Hammarskjöld, and his party.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he would closely study the findings of an international commission linked to the death of Dag Hammarskjöld, the former United Nations chief killed in a 1961 plane crash.
