UN deputy chief praises resilience of Haiti’s people, says ‘incredible’ relief effort underway

On a two-day mission to Haiti, the UN deputy chief said on Friday that relief teams are “working day and night”, and that she was struck by the resilience of the Haitian people, who had mobilized quickly to support their neighbours in the aftermath of last week’s massive earthquake and subsequent tropical storm.

UN committed to a ‘brighter future’ for Haiti, as independent rights experts call for more action on behalf of cholera victims

A group of 13 independent UN human rights experts on Thursday called on the UN chief, António Guterres, to “urgently step up efforts” to fulfill a UN pledge to help victims of a nine-year-long cholera epidemic in Haiti that killed over 10,000 citizens.

The UN Security Council has stressed the need to resolve the ongoing political impasse in Haiti between President Jovenel Moïse and a surging opposition movement. 

A community violence reduction program, supported by the UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti, employed local residents in a 2012 cash-for-work programme in helping rebuild the lives and the economy.

‘All actors’ must lend support as humanitarian crisis continues in Haiti, UN rights chief urges

Expressing deep concern for the impact on human rights of ongoing political unrest in Haiti, the UN rights chief on Friday called on all actors to acknowledge the grievances of Haitians, many of whom have been demanding the president step down amidst violent demonstrations which ignited a sprawling emergency in recent weeks.

The United Nations Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) works with members of Haiti's Provisionary Electoral Council (CEP) to gather and transport voter's ballots from around Haiti to the capital, Port au Prince for tabulation.
