A seed distribution campaign has helped Ethiopian farmers “bounce back” following a severe drought caused by the El Niño weather phenomenon, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has said.

UN experts call on Ethiopia to allow international panel to help probe violence against protesters

Urging Ethiopian authorities to end their violent crackdown on peaceful protests, which has reportedly led to the death of over 600 people since November 2015, two United Nations human rights experts today further called on the Government to allow an international commission of inquiry to investigate the protests and the violence used against peaceful demonstrators.

UN rights office calls for independent inquiry following numerous deaths at an Ethiopian festival

Expressing concern at increasing unrest in several Ethiopian towns following deaths of a number of people in unclear circumstances in the country’s Bishoftu town, the United Nations human rights arm has called on protesters to exercise restraint and on security forces to conduct themselves in line with international human rights laws and standards.

Voicing concern over serious human rights violations in the Oromia and Amhara regions of Ethiopia earlier this month, the United Nations human rights chief today urged the Government to ensure access for independent observers to affected areas and to work towards opening up political and democratic reforms.

Ban urges ‘maximum restraint’ in wake of reported fighting at border between Ethiopia and Eritrea

Deeply concerned by reports of fighting on 12 and 13 June on the border between Ethiopia and Eritrea, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who is on an official visit to Belgium, met in Brussels today with top officials from both the African countries, with the parties calling for maximum restraint.
