Armed conflict is robbing 28 million children of an education by exposing them to widespread rape and other sexual violence, targeted attacks on schools and other human rights abuses, according to a United Nations report issued today.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today lauded the role philanthropists play in facilitating access to education and encouraged them to commit more resources to improve quality and ensure that even the most marginalized children have opportunities to acquire education.

While Senegal has played a leading role in the promotion of global commitments to ensure the right to education, less than half of its citizens are literate and significant challenges remain in providing quality education in the country, says an independent United Nations expert.
