Time to repair “a world in pieces” and create peace: UN chief

“We are a world in pieces” that needs instead to become a “world at peace.”

The words of the UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday, at the opening of the UN General Debate, when every country gets to address the 193-member General Assembly in New York.

President of the United States Donald Trump said Member States needed to confront what he called “wicked” rogue regimes, adding that it might be necessary for the US to “totally destroy” North Korea if it failed to stop its nuclear weapons programme.

Countries support UN reform pledge

Reform of the United Nations took centre stage this Monday as 128 countries backed a pledge to reshape the global organization.

Spur African development by focusing on successes: UN chief

If Africa is to achieve sustainable development, then more emphasis should be placed on its successes, not crises, UN Secretary-General António Guterres told reporters in New York on Wednesday.

The UN chief, fresh from the African Union (AU) Summit in Ethiopia, also addressed issues such as the recent suspension of the refugee programme in the United States.
