Refugees in western DR of Congo to be repatriated from neighbouring Republic of Congo

The United Nations refugee agency said today it plans to repatriate thousands of Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) citizens from the neighbouring Republic of the Congo (RoC) starting at the end of this month, helping them return across difficult terrain where travelling just 100 kilometres can take 10 hours.

UN mission searches villages in eastern DR of Congo for rebel holdouts

With one rebel group refusing to join the disarmament programme in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), some 800 United Nations peacekeepers looked for militia members in villages in the northeastern Ituri district over the weekend, returning fire and sending some armed people fleeing.

UN agency helps some 3,000 children in DR of Congo disarm

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) is helping to maintain a separate space for children in disarmament sites in the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and while nearly 3,000 youngsters associated with armed militias have been attended to at seven sites, not enough have been girls, the agency said today.

A cholera epidemic in a displaced persons' camp in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) could explode into a humanitarian catastrophe unless urgent measures are taken to halt growing insecurity and harassment by government troops that are causing residents to flee, spreading the deadly bacteria, a United Nations official warned today.

Former combatants in northeast DR of Congo rush to disarm before midnight deadline – UN

Hundreds of former militia members in the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) rushed to join the United Nations peacekeeping mission's disarmament and re-integration programme today before a midnight deadline, bringing to 9,000 the number of the estimated 15,000 militia members in the area who have given up their weapons.
