'Waves of violence' by rebels in eastern DR Congo forces thousands to flee – UN

The “cycle of misery” is continuing in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) three years after a major rebel offensive was defeated by United Nations and Government forces in North Kivu, as now, armed militia and rebel groups are again targeting the region for violence and putting thousands of civilians on the run, the UN refugee agency reported today.

South African special forces commander appointed to lead UN troops in DR Congo

UN human rights chief calls for DPR Korea to be referred to International Criminal Court

The top United Nations human rights official today called on the Security Council to refer the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to the International Criminal Court, citing continuing gross rights violations, “the institutional nature and severity of which pose a threat to international peace and security.”

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today called for swift action to bring to justice the perpetrators of a deadly attack yesterday against the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), pledging continued support in the battle against rebel forces.

DR Congo: Security Council calls for total neutralization of foreign, local armed groups in east
