The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and four partner agencies have been tasked with leading a new push to help countries curb the land-based pollution of coastal areas and shorelines.
Education needs to be one of the key pillars for action by countries across the world to better protect the seas and oceans from damaging climate change, said the head of the UN Scientific, Educational, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Thursday.
The world must harness “clear, transformative and actionable solutions” to address the ocean crisis, the President of the UN General Assembly said on Tuesday, opening a meeting to generate momentum towards the 2022 UN Ocean Conference, when public health safety measures allow.
The health of the ocean will ultimately determine the survival of humankind on Earth, according to the UN Special Envoy for the Ocean, Peter Thomson. Marking the opening of the International Decade for Ocean Science, the former top Fijian diplomat and General Assembly president, told UN News that a healthy planet is inextricably linked to a healthy ocean.
The Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, continues through to 2030, providing an opportunity for nations to work together to generate the scientific expertise needed to keep ocean life safe, and the seas sustainable.
Reminding us that currently the ocean is ailing, and needs better science and data to be successfully managed, the Executive Secretary of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, Vladimir Ryabinin, spoke to UN News about the scientists’ dream of managing the ocean in a way that will help us all live longer and healthier lives.
