Make progress or risk redundancy, UN chief warns world disarmament body
A new global vision for arms control is needed and States must not “sleepwalk” into a new nuclear arms race, the UN Secretary-General said on Monday.
A new global vision for arms control is needed and States must not “sleepwalk” into a new nuclear arms race, the UN Secretary-General said on Monday.
Michael Møller, head of the UN in Geneva, has warned delegates to the Conference on Disarmament that cyber-security challenges, and the existence of new weapons systems and technologies, are not being sufficiently addressed or reflected in current arms control regimes.
Efforts to kick-start talks on ridding the world of weapons of mass destruction have begun in Geneva, with a call for an end to the “stalemate” that’s bogged down disarmament discussions for decades.
The call for action came from the UN's Acting High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Kim Won-soo.
Kim echoed repeated entreaties from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to the Conference On Disarmament (COD) “to return to work” on the key issues of disarmament and non-proliferation.
Daniel Johnson has more.
