United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today recommended to the General Assembly that former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Manuel de Oliveira Guterres become the next UN High Commissioner for Refugees, with a three-year mandate beginning 15 June.

UN's new human rights chief says tackling racism, protecting civilians are key goals

The new United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Sergio Vieira de Mello, started his four-year term today in Geneva, saying that he wanted to focus on the protection of civilian populations in conflict as well as the fight against racism and promotion of women's rights.
