UN agencies launch new standards to improve adolescent care worldwide

Two United Nations agencies – the UN World Health Organization (WHO) and the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) – announced today they have developed new standards for quality health-care services for adolescents, which aim to help countries improve services for people between the ages of 10 and 19.

Nepali families unknowingly send their children to child traffickers

Lured by promises of education and health care, families affected by the earthquake in Nepal are unknowingly sending their children to facilities which exploit them.

Youths are also being lured by traffickers who offer fake opportunities to work abroad.

Cost of child maltreatment in Asia-Pacific tops $200 billion annually, reports UNICEF

Child abuse and violence is costing countries in East Asia and the Pacific around $209 billion a year, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) announced today in the first costing of child maltreatment in the region, revealing that “inaction about violence results in serious economic costs to countries and communities.”
