The United Nations Security Council on Sunday strongly condemned the series of terrorist attacks that have taken place in the Afghan capital, Kabul, since last Thursday and resulted in hundreds of casualties and at least 70 deaths, including children.

UN urges halt to attacks on Afghan civilians after day of record casualties

The United Nations on Saturday called on anti-Government elements in Afghanistan to stop targeting civilian-populated areas, after a series of attacks yesterday killed at least 40 people, injured more than 300 and caused extensive damage to homes and property.

Offering deep condolences to the victims’ families and a speedy recovery for those injured in the latest attack in Afghanistan targeting civilians, the top United Nations official in the country, Nicholas Haysom, condemned the attack, which targeted people gathered for Iftar at the Grand Mosque in Pul-e-Khomri, in the northern Baghlan province.

Afghanistan: UN official expresses deep concern after report reveals children bear brunt of conflict

Last year saw more children killed or maimed in Afghanistan since monitoring of those statistics began in 2007, reflecting that “children are bearing the brunt of the conflict,” according to United Nations UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s latest report on children and armed conflict in that strife-torn country.
