Members of the Security Council today condemned in the strongest possible terms yesterday’s assassination attempt against Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Governor Gul Agha Sherzai in Kandahar.
The United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, today condemned two separate acts of violence in Afghanistan – an assassination attempt against top-level officials and a terrorist explosion in the capital which left more than 15 civilians dead.
The more than 1.6 million Afghans who have returned home since March constitute the largest single refugee repatriation in 30 years, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said today.
