Adjust UN force in Abyei to current realities, peacekeeping chief urges Security Council

Amidst an increase in criminal activity in the Abyei area, which is contested by Sudan and South Sudan, the United Nations top peacekeeping official on Thursday called for deployment of additional police units, to enhance the UN’s focus on maintaining law and order there, and furthering peace between local communities.

Growing up in Harare, Zimbabwe, Ms. Chota’s awareness of the inequalities that existed between girls and boys began at an early age. The way society groomed boys for professional careers and steered girls towards domestic chores led her to start dreaming of a more equal world.

An absence of laws is an “obstacle to advancing gender equality” because it doesn’t give women the support they need to report cases of gender based violence.

That was the reality confronting Assistant Inspector of Police Annah Chota when she got to Abyei, Sudan, to take up her post.

The United Nations Security Council today extended for another five months its interim peacekeeping force in Abyei, a resource-rich area contested by Sudan and South Sudan, calling on both sides to swiftly resume regular meetings to resolve the oil-rich territory’s final status.

Sudan: Ban condemns deadly attack in Abyei, urges swift action to bring perpetrators to justice

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has strongly condemned the attacks last night by unknown assailants on the residence of the Ngok Dinka Paramount Chief in Abyei town, during which one Ethiopian peacekeeper from the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) and a young girl were killed.
