Children in European and Central Asian residential institutions vulnerable to abuse - UN

The estimated 1 million children who go from broken homes to residential institutions in Europe and Central Asia are “desperately vulnerable” to violence that is only rarely reported, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says in a new report.

The number of allegations of sexual abuse and exploitation made by and about United Nations personnel in 2004 was more than double the number reported in 2003, a development that is deeply distressing, even though contributing factors include clearer reporting procedures and new response measures, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan says in a report to the General Assembly.

UN agencies launch European campaign to combat deadly family child abuse

With family violence killing four children under the age of 14 each day in Europe, and many thousands more enduring years of abuse for every child who dies, the United Nations has launched a continent-wide campaign against the scourge, declaring that “Home sweet home” is a myth for many children.
