In a condolence message, UN chief hopes Thailand will continue to honour its King's legacy
“[King Bhumibol] was revered by the people of Thailand and highly respected internationally,” said Mr. Ban according to a statement issued by his Office.
King Bhumibol, who passed away earlier today, had been the world's longest reigning monarch. In 2006, he was presented the UN's first Human Development Lifetime Achievement Award for his tireless efforts to help the poorest and most vulnerable people in Thailand as an example to the world.
In the statement today, Secretary-General Ban also acknowledged King Bhumibol's long dedication to his country and his legacy as a unifying national leader.
Mr. Ban also expressed his hope that Thailand will continue to honour King Bhumibol's legacy of commitment to universal values and respect for human rights.
