Ban urges all Guineans to ensure peace, credible legislative polls

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has welcomed the inter-Guinean dialogue leading to the holding of legislative elections on Saturday, 28 September, and urged everyone to ensure peaceful and credible polls.

“He congratulates the people of Guinea, its Government and political leaders for their commitment to a consensual and peaceful electoral process,” Mr. Ban’s spokesperson said in a statement.

“The Secretary-General urges all Guineans to do their utmost to ensure peaceful, transparent and credible elections.”

Guinea’s long-delayed legislative election, which was scheduled for 24 September, was postponed to tomorrow following talks in Conakry between the Government and opposition parties last weekend, according to media reports.

In today’s statement, Mr. Ban expressed appreciation for the efforts of the College of Facilitators, including his Special Representative for West Africa, Saïd Djinnit.
