Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Prime Minister Milo Ðukanoviæ of Montenegro today discussed a slew of political and development issues on the sidelines of the high-level General Assembly debate due to start on Tuesday.

Mr. Ban and Mr. Ðukanoviæ discussed cooperation between the United Nations and Montenegro, including the country's important contribution to UN peace operations as well as its role in the Human Rights Council, according to a readout of the meeting.

The UN chief underlined the commitment by UN agencies, funds and programmes in Montenegro to continue to assist it in its reform process.

The two officials also exchanged views on developments in the wider Western Balkans region, including in the ongoing dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, and the lack of progress in the “name” issue between the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Greece.

In addition, they discussed ways to accelerate progress towards the eight anti-poverty targets known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the post-2015 development agenda, as well as the importance of action on climate change.
