Bangladesh: Ban deeply saddened at loss of life and injuries in building collapse

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon voiced his deep sadness at the loss of life and injuries caused by the collapse of a garment factory on the outskirts of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, earlier this week.

“He extends his sincere condolences to the Government and people of Bangladesh,” his spokesperson said in a statement issued today. “He expresses his deepest sympathies to those who have lost loved ones or have been otherwise affected by this tragedy.”

Mr. Ban stated the UN’s readiness to provide any assistance that may be needed in the wake of Wednesday’s collapse of the eight-storey Rana Plaza building. The accident has reportedly killed at least 307 people, while as many as 50 survivors have been located so far.

He has also expressed his sympathies in a letter to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
