Secretary-General voices sadness at loss of life, damage in flood-affected Argentina

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today voiced his sadness at the loss of life and the damage to homes and infrastructure in Argentina as a result of the torrential floods in the capital, Buenos Aires, and in the city of La Plata.

More than 50 people have reportedly died after one of the heaviest storms recorded caused flash floods earlier this week. Thousands were evacuated from their homes and dozens are still stranded on rooftops, treetops and the roofs of city buses, according to media reports.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Mr. Ban extended his sincere condolences to the Government and people of Argentina, particularly the families of those who have perished or been otherwise affected in the disaster.

“The United Nations stands ready to lend its assistance to efforts to respond to humanitarian needs created by the disaster and to mobilize any international support needed,” said the statement.
