UN-Arab League envoy condemns explosion in Syrian capital

The Joint Special Representative of the United Nations and the League of Arab States on the Syrian crisis, Lakhdar Brahimi, today strongly condemned the explosions that rocked Damascus on Thursday, killing around 100 people and injuring 250 more.

“Nothing could justify such horrible actions that amount to war crimes under international law,” Mr. Brahimi said in a statement issued by his spokesperson.

The statement noted that in his report to the Security Council last month, Mr. Brahimi proposed that an independent international investigation be carried for these types of crimes.

Mr. Brahimi joins Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in deploring yesterday's bombings and calling for the immediate cease of violence by all parties in the country.

Up to 70,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began in March 2011.
