Bahrain: Ban condemns bombing, voices concern over use of force against protesters

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today condemned the bomb attack that took place recently near the village of Eker, Bahrain, injuring several policemen, and also voiced concern at the “excessive” use of force against protesters which continues to result in civilian casualties.

Since February, there have been renewed clashes in Bahrain between security forces and demonstrators, a year after widespread civil protests first emerged in the country.

Mr. Ban “remains concerned by the excessive use of force against protestors which continues to result in civilian casualties. He appeals to all sides to act with restraint and refrain from violence,” his spokesperson said in a statement.

“The fundamental human rights of the Bahraini people, including the right to peaceful protest, must be respected,” the statement added.

“He firmly believes that an all inclusive and meaningful national dialogue that addresses the legitimate aspirations of all Bahrainis will go a long way to promote peace and stability in the country.”
